Tim Kelly Com 251 Paper #2 After learning about the communication theories in class, I have started to notice some circumstances that can be explained by certain theories. Before this class, I was a participant in and a witness to all kinds of communication. However, I never thought to think of the reason that something was said or done. One of the most noticeable elements of communication that I have witnessed is face saving and face giving, which is outlined in the Face Management theory, and in Ting-Toomey’s extension of the theory. Because of the prevalence of the face saving strategy, I began to wonder why, and how someone would save his or her own face. While at a party recently, I noticed a situation in which one person’s face was saved at the expense of another’s. A few weekends ago I was at my friends birthday party. There were a lot of people in her small house, so it was very crowded. I was in the kitchen talking with a few people, and suddenly one of them fell because the floor was slippery. His friends began to laugh a little bit, in a joking manner. After he got up, he was noticeably embarrassed and his friends had a few more jokes for him. That really upset him and he proceeded to throw a cup of beer at one of his friends, and say some nasty things to them.
