Chapter 4 Radiation and Spectra ¾ Maxwell's Theory of Electromagnetism In the vicinity of an electric charge, another charge feels a force of attraction or repulsion: Opposite charges attract; like charges repel. For stationary charges only electrostatic interaction is observed. For charges in motion magnetism is observed along with electric interaction. – During the 19 th century experiments with electric charges have demonstrated that magnetism was the result of moving charged particles.
