08/31/2011  America in Vietnam 1950 (US intervened in Franco-Vietminh war) to 1975 (Fall/Collapse of Saigon) Only 8-year shooting war Major defeat for the US  and very costly (US billion, and billions of dollars);  58,000 US killed; 1-3 million Vietnamese casualties; 200,000 Cambodians killed,  many displaced people caused huge problem; displaced people constantly moving French Colonialism Japan was initial place for French missionaries, but Japan shut their dor to them  to stop outside influence so the missionaries turn their eyes to Vietnam,  Cambodia, etc. 1. 1830s starts revolutions and many of the missionaries were killed; France  sends a fleet and but by 1854, they controlled all the provinces in  Northern and Central Vietnam (French divided Vietnam into 3 regions,  Tonkin, Annam and Chochin (Mie Cong); Chochin as their direct colony
