1 Theology 100-22 7 April 2011 Our Lady of Guadalupe The story of Our Lady of Guadalupe presents a miraculous work of Mary in the life of a common, yet profoundly loyal, man. The poem Nican Monohua recounts this story from the moment Mary appeared to Juan Diego to the time his efforts finally paid off and a church was built in Mary’s honor. Although the bishop repeatedly denied Juan Diego’s claims of speaking to Mary without any visible proof, Diego remained persistent in fulfilling Mary’s request. The poem vividly describes the unseasonably beautiful flowers Diego carries to the bishop before revealing the marvelous painting of Mary that inexplicably appears on his clothing as proof that Mary visited Diego. The story of Our Lady of Guadalupe is interesting because it reminds Christians of Mary’s importance in the Church and her perpetual presence in their faith. Faith can be defined as belief that is not based on proof. Although Diego had seen Mary with his own eyes, he could not prove her presence to the bishop, who had not
