Supreme Court Cases: Engle v. Vitale - The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Engel; it was a violation of the 1 st amendment for state officials to require religious prayer in public schools. (1962). Gitlow v. New York - The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Gitlow. They established that the 14 th amendment extended the reach of the right to freedom of speech and press to the government of the states. (1925) Hernandez v. Texas - 1954 extended protection against discrimination to Hispanics. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Hernandez. All racial groups in the U.S. have equal protection under the 14 th amendment, in the context of non-whites being on jury selecting committees. Lemon v. Kurtzman - The Court ruled that Rhode Island and Pennsylvania’s laws which allowed financial support of private religious schools violated the “establishment clause” of the 1 st amendment, in favor of Lemon.
