Accessory (important) terms: o Chromosomes - DNA protein complex (eukaryotes only) o Ploidy Number - A reference to chromosome numbers # of chromosomes sharing the same genes forming a set in a given cell Homdogous chromosomes – all chromosomes that share the same gene sex o Haplordy: all chromosomes are in sets of one o Diplordy: all chromosomes are in sets of two 2. Mitosis Properties o Produce 2 daughter cells from the pre-existing mother cell o Both daughter cells have the same exact chromosome # as the mother cell o Most of the time, Mitosis is followed by physical division of the mother cell (see illustration) o In most cases, growth occurs before mitotic divisions Cell Cycle (see illustration) Mitosis Phases o Chromosome structure (post-replication) o Sister chromatids condense (thicken & shorten); they gain strength o Prophase o Chromosome condensation
