Letter to the Senators About Pathogens Dr. Powell-Coffman Section:2 Spring 2011 Dear Senators, Development of antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens has become a serious health problem. According to Antibiotic Resistance, Mutation Rates and MRSA by Leslie Pray, some scientists believe antibiotic resistance to be one of the top health problems of our century! Antibiotic-resistant bacteria have become such a tremendous problem because of their ability to mutate. Because bacteria is capable of transformation in such a short amount of time, it is possible for it to mutate so that it is immune to the effects of an antibiotic, thus, continuing to grow and mutate at a high rate. If hit again by an antibiotic, this process will repeat itself and just as before, only the extremely strong bacteria will survive. This time could be vital because the bacteria had mutated again to be even more resistant and after the antibiotic killed most of the bacteria.
