First chop a medium- sized onion into 10 or so pieces. Dilute in 1.5% Sodium Chloride. - Blend the onion until it is completely homogenized. If too foamy add 50 ml of solution. - Pour homogenate into a beaker and incubate in 60 C water bath for 15 minutes. - Cool the mixture in an ice bath for five minutes and then filter the cool homogenate through cheesecloth to remove pieces of the onion. - Each student group should take a few milliliters of the filtrate in a test tube. The onion DNA is in this filtrate and somehow must be isolated.
