Unformatted text preview: EATING RIGHT: THE ETHICS OF FOOD CHOICES AND FOOD POLICY February 2, 2011 Meat and Animal Products Plan for Today: Admin stuff Arguments about meat and animal products (based on concerns about animals) Whos taken a phil class before? Admin Stuff: Clickers Clicker microquizzes start counting today. Admin Stuff: Clickers Question at the beginning of lecture, on the content of the reading. Question at the end of lecture, on either the content of the reading or the content of the lecture. (Questions will be designed to be easy - not meant to be tricky. Should be easy to answer if you did the reading, had an eye open during the lecture.) Heres how it will work. Admin Stuff: Clickers Each questions worth two points. Get one for answering. Get another for answering correctly. Heres how it will work. Admin Stuff: Clickers At the end of the term, you get a clicker-based grade. (Which counts for 10% of your total grade for the term.) 75% of possible points: A 65% of possible points: B 50% of possible points: C 35% of possible points: D Heres how it will work. Admin Stuff: Clickers The design here is to make the best of the unfortunate fact that we have to assign grades by giving you a chance to exercise some control over what kind of grade you get by doing stuff thats a good idea anyway... Heres how it will work. Admin Stuff: Short Assignments and Extra Credit First short assignment was due last Friday. Second one is due tonight. First extra credit is due tonight. In general, therell be a short assignment most weeks - probably 10 over course of term - and ec available pretty frequently - probably 4 or 5 over course of term. Also possibility of freelance extra credit. Talk to your TA if theres something you want to do, or a project you want to work on. Admin Stuff: Short Assignments and Extra Credit We wont accept late short assignments. (Except for documented emergencies.) BUT: Big class, need to take a hard line or else its a total disaster. Admin Stuff: Short Assignments and Extra Credit BUT: You can rewrite up to two short assignments over the course of the term, and (change of policy) its possible to use those rewrites to submit assignments you missed the Frst time around. Note this is a change of policy, and note opportunity cost. Admin Stuff: Grading reminder Clicker quizzes: 10% Recitation: 15% In general, therell be a short assignment most weeks - probably 10 over course of term - and ec available pretty frequently - probably 4 or 5 over course of term.
