Chapter 12 - The cell cycle Objectives 1. Explain how cell division functions in reproduction, growth, and repair. 2. Describe the structural organization of a prokaryotic and eukaryotic genome. 3. Describe binary fission in bacteria and how this process may have evolved to mitosis in eukaryotes. 4. Cell division enables the genome of one cell to be passed to 2 daughter cells. 5. Describe how chromosome number changes throughout the human life cycle. 6. List the phases of the cell cycle and describe the events that occur during each phase. 7. List the phases of mitosis and describe the events characteristic of each phase. 8. Recognize the phases of mitosis from diagrams or micrographs. 9. Draw or describe the spindle apparatus including centrosomes, nonkinetochore microtubules, kinetochore microtubules, asters, and centrioles (in animal cells). 10. Describe what changes occur in the spindle apparatus during each phase of mitosis. 11. Explain the pole-ward chromosomal movement and elongation of the cell’s polar axis. 12. Compare cytokinesis in animals and plants. 13. Describe the roles of checkpoints in the cell-cycle control system. 14. Describe the internal and external factors which influence the cell-cycle control system. 15. Explain how abnormal cell division of cancerous cells differs from normal cell division. 16. Distinguish between benign, malignant, and metastatic tumors . Key Words Anaphase anchorage dependence aster Bacteria benign tumor binary fission cell cycle cell division cell plate centromere centrosome checkpoint chromatin chromosome cleavage cleavage furrow
