Writing a Lab Report It should be written as if you were going to submit it to a scientific journal for publication. Thus it should follow a very specific format and should be written for a general audience, not just for your instructor. The purpose of a lab report is to describe the experiment performed and the results obtained in a clear and concise manner. The format of the formal lab reports is derived from that used in a scientific paper. There are a number of sections: Title, Synopsis, Background/Introduction, Observation, Hypothesis or Prediction, Method/Experimental Procedure, Data and Results, Discussion, Conclusion may also have Further Studies and Acknowledgements. The lab report is written in the third-person, usually in the past-tense. Proper grammar and spelling are expected. Lab report should be typed, double spaced on 11 x 81/2 white paper. Only use one side of the paper. The font should be legible (Arial, 10 or 12 font size). The graphs are to done using Excel – follow the directions in your lab book, if you need help go to the tutoring center. A well-written scientific report must fulfill two objectives. 1. It must clearly and completely describe the procedures that were followed and the results that were obtained. It should be possible for the reader of the report to repeat the study 2. It must place these results in perspective by relating them to the existing state of knowledge and by interpreting their significance for future study. WRITING STYLE: The reports will be read critically, not only for scientific content and logic, but also for your ability to express yourself in this form of writing. The text should be organized into logical paragraphs and sentences. Proofread. Use the spell check on your word processors. There is no excuse for spelling errors. When you are writing about methods and results, be sure to use past tense because you have completed the experiments by the time you begin writing. Try to avoid the use of “we” and “I” in your paper. Scientific writing should be clear and concise. Don’t use five words when two will do. Work on clarity and organization in your presentation. GENERAL ORGANIZATION Your report should follow similar guidelines that are used by scientific journals. Thus it will contain the following sections: Cover Page Abstract/Synopsis Observation/Problem Background Hypothesis or prediction Methods/Experimental Procedure Results/Data Discussion Conclusion Further studies Acknowledgements References Appendix
