Unformatted text preview: R A C E , R A C I S M A N D H E A L T H I N A M E R I C A J A N I S H U T C H I N S O N T H E C O- E X I S T E N C E O F R A C E A N D R A C I S M THE GENETIC MODEL OF HEALTH Health differences between Blacks and Whites are based on 3 fallacious assumptions: 1.Race is a valid biological category. 2.Genes that determine race are linked to those that determine health. 3.The health of a population is mainly determined by the biological constitution of the population. These assumptions have been the foundation for the health care of non- Whites in the United States. THE GENETIC MODEL OF HEALTH Assumed Black inferiority Diseased Population The conclusion = mainstream medicine is therefore ineffective so allocating money for health care, education and housing is a waste of money. THE GENETIC MODEL OF HEALTH Adherence to this model has been persistent because of systemic, institutional, individual and scientific racism. The application of this model to health care is what significantly contributes to the poor health of people of color. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES ON RACE & HEALTH A belief in the biological uniqueness of people of African descent formed the basis of health care of slaves, free Blacks and African Americans.of health care of slaves, free Blacks and African Americans....
