Critical Reading Assignment (CRA) Writing Assignment #1 Fall 2011 Page Length: 3 pages Value: 10% of course grade Due Date: Beginning of section during Week 3. After this time, late penalties will apply (see MMW Style Sheet). Even with late penalties, your CRA will not be accepted after section of Week 5, after which time it will be considered “not completed” and will result in a grade of F for the course. Any exception to this deadline must be approved with specific and legitimate documentation in advance by your TA. Purpose In MMW, you are learning how to evaluate scholarly arguments and to make effective arguments of your own. In this assignment, you will improve your critical reading skills by carefully identifying the components of an argument in a secondary source assigned by your professor (hereafter referred to as the CRA source). While in the third writing assignment you will evaluate the strength of the argument made in this source, and you will advance your own position on the subject, in this assignment your focus will be to fully understand what the argument is, to describe how the scholar constructs the argument, and to determine what more you need to know in order to assess the argument’s strengths in a later assignment. You are being asked to slow down and “listen” to what the scholar is arguing before rushing to judgment or expressing your opinion. In this assignment, you will identify the components of the argument with annotations, summarize the scholar's argument, and consider areas for further research; in the process you will improve your skills in critical reading, analysis, summarizing, paraphrasing, and research.
