CS 143 * Animal Cognition Lecture 5: PRIMATE COGNITION IN THE LAB Introduction - This, and the next, lecture will focus primarily on Laboratory (vs. Field) Research - Consider Ecological Validity (or sometimes lack thereof!) of this work - Also begin to consider possible applications of the following to the Social context - Social Cognition research (in lab & field) will be a major focus later in term - Note evidence for Individual Differences (i.e. between individuals of one species) - With multi-faceted perceptual & motor repertoire, cognition is complex & variably distributed - The more a species depends on learning, the more experience will shape each individual - Some Jargon: - “ Match to Sample ” ( MTS ) – Present sample, then alternatives; Pick matching alternative - “ Transfer ”– Apply learned concept or strategy to novel stimuli, require fewer “trials to criterion” - “ First Trial Success ”- After training, full immed. transfer Perceptual Integration (e.g. Anderson; Boysen; D’Amato; Vauclair) - Size Constancy, Distance Perception, Hand-Eye Coordination, etc. - All require time, experience to develop; Locomotor and object play help - Cross Modal Mapping - Can do visual<>haptic recognition of stimulus presented in other modality - Much harder to transfer rule (e.g. MTS) learned in 1 modality to other; Apes better than monkeys - Multi-Modal Access - Weigl Principle= Can classify same object per different dimensions (color, shape, size, function) - e.g. Can group red ball w/other (non-red) balls OR w/other (non-round) red objects - Representing Space - Variety of studies show efficient search , esp in species w/patchy distributed resources - In lab, primates can learn to navigate a virtual space , develop cognitive map by vision alone - Some Chimps can use toy object placed in 3D model to find real object in actual room Interacting w/ Objects (e.g. Chevalier-Skolnikoff; Matsuzawa; Menzel; Natale; Parker; Rumbaugh; Visalberghi) - Tendencies - Busy fingers! Can use opportunity-to-manipulate-objects as a reinforcement!
