However, there is a subtle sense oF awe and mystery surrounding the short death we call sleep. What is Sleep? What Observations Defne Sleep? Little movement Stereotypic posture Reduced response to stimulation Reversibility What Physiological Parameters Defne Sleep? Electroencephalogram (EEG): Brain waves Electrooculogram (EOG): Eye Movements Electromyogram (EMG): Muscle Tension Sleep Stages-Decreased alpha activity; EEG ,mostly low voltage-Slow, rolling eye movements-EMG moderate-low-Sleep spindles appear in the EEG-Eye movements are rare-EMG is low-moderate-High amplitude, slow Delta waves-Delta waves dominate the EEG-Low voltage, mixed pattern, similar to Stage 1-Bursts of rapid eye movement-EMG is virtually absent Slow wave activity (SWA) Sleep Architecture Early sleep Late sleep Asleep and Awake?
