THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE MOVEMENT 2 The Official Language Movement Most of the articles I found on bilingualism in education referred to California's Proposition 227, which proposed to enroll non-English speaking students into a one-year program to teach them the language. According to an article on FoxNews, the proposition was quickly squashed and students who do not effectively speak the English language are thrown into an English immersion environment. States such as Arizona have completely eliminated bilingual education in a similar proposition. Accoring to the North County Times website, "Politics made 'bilingual' a dirty word." Again, this site is discussing Proposition 227 in California, stating that while many people show admiration for those that speak more than one language, learning a second language has never been a priority in American schools. Bilingual education is a complete failure, states another website.
