Introduction Definition of chronic heart failure Heart failure is a complex syndrome that can result from much structural or functional cardiac disorder that impairs the ability of the heart to function as a pump to support a physiological circulation. The syndrome of heart failure is characterised by symptoms such as breathlessness and fatigue, and signs such as fluid retention. There is no single diagnostic test for heart failure, and diagnosis relies on clinical judgement based on a combination of history, physical examination and appropriate investigations. Recommendation for future development Heart failure is a chronic condition with a high mortality and a considerable impact on the patients quality of life. The clinical condition may fluctuate and repeated admission to hospital is common, particularly for patients with more severe heart failure and other co-morbidities.
