CHM 205 Fall 2007 Dr. Logan CH 7 Learning Objectives Chapter 7: Atomic Structure Know and be able to use the key equations , found on p. 325, with the exception of the deBroglie equation, as well as those described below. Describe the properties of electromagnetic radiation. a. Know and use the terms wavelength, frequency, amplitude, and node. b. Use the equation c= λν to relate the speed of light, and the wavelength and frequency of electromagnetic radiation . c. Recognize the relative wavelength, frequency, and energy of the various types of electromagnetic radiation. d. Know what a photon is (which is a “particle” of electromagnetic radiation having zero mass and an energy given by Planck’s equation, E=h ν ) and that this energy is quantized. Understand the origin of light from excited atoms and its relationship to atomic structure. a. Understand the concept of quantized energies in atoms, and understand how the line spectrum of atomic hydrogen supports the concept of quantized energies within atoms. b.
