However, unlike the September 2010 magnitude 7.0 earthquake, which struck early in the morning when streets were virtually empty, this earthquake struck just before 1 pm local time when the streets, shops and offices in Christchurch were full. A strong aftershock in December caused further damage to buildings. Shaking intensity in Christchurch was much greater for this magnitude 6.3 earthquake than the September 2010 earthquake. This is due to the proximity of the epicenter to the city and the shallow depth, this magnitude 6.3 earthquake was significantly closer, Christchurch buildings were destroyed in this earthquake and entire suburbs were left unliveable.
