Taarika George Partner- Allie Fitzpatrick Due 11/24/04 Period F The Effect of Diffusion in Agar INTRODUCTION The purpose of this experiment is to see how diffusion and cell size are related. Different sized cubes of agar will be soaked in 150 mL of HCl to determine this. This illustrates the biological concept of how diffusion works in different sized objects. If different sized cubes are soaked in HCl to determine the rate of diffusion to cell size, then the smallest cube will have the most diffusion because its surface area is the smallest which will allow diffusion to occur quicker. RESULTS After soaking the agar cubes in HCl, each of the cubes had turned clear. In the middle of the 3 cm and 2 cm cubes was a tiny pink square. The depth of the pink square in the 3 cm cube measured: 1.2 X 1 X .2 X 1 cm. The depth of the 2 cm cube measure .8 cm all the way around. The 1 cm cube contained no pink square and was completely clear. ANALYSIS
