Hippocrates was a man who helped to advance the study of medicine in his time. He was born in 460 BC in the island of Cos. He is said to be related to the son of Apollo, Aesculapius. Hippocrates was one of the many sons of Praxithea and Heracliedes. He got his interest in medicine from his father who was a member of the priest-physician group known as Asclepiads. His father helped him to learn the basics of medicine and he took it from there. Hippocrates realized the best way to get a better understanding of medicine was to study how other places dealt with medical problems. So he traveled throughout Asia Minor and studied the local medical traditions. After studying the many medical traditions, he returned to Greece and founded his own medical school, which was one of the first of his time. Hippocrates taught there and educated the people on his theories. He showed people that illnesses and diseases were not caused by gods or demons, as many believed they were.
