Hurricanes Isn’t it hard to imagine that a storm could be responsible for the taking of lives? Well, it’s scary to think about but it’s true. Hurricanes are very deadly storms, which start in the ocean and leave death and destruction behind. Hurricanes usually form in the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico or the Eastern Pacific Ocean, because of their tropical origin (“Hurricanes”, par 1). Hurricanes are the fiercest storms that can be produced by the atmosphere. A hurricane starts out in the ocean and develops because of low atmospheric pressure. They form where there is moist air, warm water and converging equatorial winds (“How A Hurricane Forms”, par 1). There are some thunderstorms that start in the Atlantic, which become hurricanes. First tropical depression happens, where there is rain and swirling clouds and wind speeds of about thirty-eight miles per hour. Then a tropical storm occurs, where wind speeds are able to reach about seventy- nine miles per hour. After that, a hurricane is formed, with wind speeds greater than seventy-four miles per hour. A normal hurricane produces enough energy equivalent to 500,000 atom bombs. They usually cause about seventy-four mile per hour winds and bring rain (“How A Hurricane Forms, par 2). Hurricanes, over the years, have had a big effect economically. They’ve broken many families apart, they have ruined entire towns and cities and, through their effects, they have highlighted the importance of being aware for residents of hurricane prone areas. Hurricanes affect families. Through their damages, they wreck houses and kill people. Many families have gone through the tragedy of losing a loved one, all because of a storm.
