Taarika George Partner- Casey Watrous 9/2704 Period F The Effect of Sugar Concentrations on Potato Cores INTRODUCTION - The purpose of this lab is to see what happens to potato cores when they are soaked in different concentrations of sugar water. If potato cores are put in different concentrations of sugar water, then they will shrink in size because the sugar will mix in with the starch in the potato, creating a chemical reaction, which will make the potato core shrink. RESULTS- See attached graph and table ANALYSIS- 1. The relationship between the concentration of the water and the change in the mass of the potato cores is that the more concentration of sugar water, the more the mass went down. In the 10% concentration of sugar, the mass of the core went from .33g to .31g. In the 20% solution of sugar, the mass of the core went from .32g to .22 g. 2. For the core in the plain tap water, when the volume decreased, the mass increased. The core with a 10% concentration of sugar water decreased in volume and in mass. Then for the core in 20% concentration of sugar water, the volume increased, but the mass decreased. 3. There will be no change in mass at a 5% concentration of sugar water.
