Axia College Material Appendix D Critical Analysis Forms Fill out one form for each source. Source 1 Title: Benefits of Adoption Citation: Willke, J.C. "Adoption Is Beneficial." Opposing Viewpoints: Adoption . Ed. Mary Williams. Detroit: Greenhaven Press, 2006. Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center . Gale. Apollo Library. 5 July 2008 <http://find.galegroup.com/ovrc/infomark.do?&contentSet=GSRC&type =retrieve&tabID=T010&prodId=OVRC&docId=EJ3010104257&source =gale&srcprod= 1 Identify the principal issue presented by the source. The principal issue presented by the source is that adoption is beneficial for unwed mothers and their babies. Mothers, particularly teenagers, will benefit from more education, less reliance on government aid, greater rates of employment, and decreased rates of depression. And their babies will benefit from improved mental and physical health, increased success in school, and stronger attachments to family members. 2 Identify any examples of bias presented by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. The author is slanted towards putting children of unwed mothers up for adoption. The bias is expressed throughout the body of the argument including the use of supporting studies and the repeated reference to adoptive parents as “loving arms”. However it is important to note that this bias is not baseless since the author provides a wealth of evidence to reinforce this opinion. 3 Identify any areas that are vague or ambiguous. If none exist, explain how you determined this. There are several ambiguous statements in the article including the vague statement in the first study that states “75% of adopted adolescents are psychologically healthy” with no comparison made to children who are not adopted. In addition some of the findings of various studies presented by the source are lacking in details. The second study claims that adopted children had “superior home environments, more so than any of the other groups” with no definition of “superior” provided. Another example of vagueness is that the author does not provide any explanation or evidence to prove the validity of the claim that there is a pro-abortion industry push to “discredit” the option of adoption. 4 Do you find the source credible? Explain your reasoning. Despite a few number of ambiguous statements, I do find the source credible. There source provides a large number of evidence to validate the author’s claim. In addition to that, the author, Willke, is physician and is the president of an agency, The Life Issues Institute in Cincinnati , which deals specifically with the issue; therefore he is likely to have expertise in this field of study. 5
