JOURNAL ENTRY OF AN AMERICAN INDIAN 2 Journal entry of an American Indian Journal Entry: Subordinate Group Member (American Indian) As a member of the Cherokee Nation, we are being mistreated by the white man. President Andrew Jackson in 1830 passes the Indian Removal Act. This affects all Indians east of the Mississippi. It was an act to remove us from our land that we have had since our creation. If we wish to stay on our land we have to become citizens of the state. We have tried to fight this in so many ways. We have even tried to adopt the policy of assimilation in order to make the white man believe we are civilized people. Many of us have become Christians and have started attending school that is being taught by the white men and women. The white man are always coming onto our land and stealing our livestock and burning down our homes. We adopted a written constitution declaring ourselves to be a sovereign nation, and we
