How To Approach The Study Of Perception Of Any Complex System Example: BLACK BOX 1. How does it work? We can try to understand the detailed internal circuitry. 2. What does it do? We can try to ascertain the relationship between input and output without having to know anything about its internal structure. The system must be studied at multiple, different levels of analysis. (Lvl 1.) What problem is the system solving? (“Computational Analysis”) (Lvl 2.) What strategy is it adopting? (“Algorithm”) (Lvl 3.) How is it implemented in hardware, can we replicate it? Example: $ Cash Register $ (Lvl 1.) What does it do and why? a. Addition: 15, 20 35 b. Because this is how prices of items combine (Lvl 2.) What representation and what algorithm is used? a. Representation – binary or decimal? b. Algorithm – proceed from right to left, carry over, etc… (Lvl 3.) Hardware implementation a. Mechanical or biological?
