Brian McEnnerney ENGL 111G 9-20-09 Rhetorical Analysis (Rough Draft) “The Scream” The infamous painting “The Scream”, by Edvard Munch, is the piece I have decided to write my rhetorical analysis on. The painting itself was done from 1893 to 1910 so it does have history, popularity, and credibility from the past. I decided to do this piece due to my love for art and media, and the painting itself is an eerie, creepy masterpiece. Even though I have examined, contemplated, and tried to analyze this artwork, there are still many unanswered questions I have about the painting. When I first take a good look at the painting, I immediately notice not the context or actual picture and what it is, but the colors of the piece. The artist not only wanted to make this an original and double take picture, but he wanted the colors to grab your attention fast. The coloring represents an old-fashion look almost, stating that the picture wants to look like a story from the past. The way Edvard mixes the colors in the background from
