Abstract In Analysis of Industrial Activities, a project was assigned with the purpose of studying the bus transportation services at the University of Houston, namely the Cougar Line. All bus routes were to be timed and analyzed, and observations regarding driver’s behaviors and route utilization were necessary to achieve the objectives of developing suggestions on the existing system, and standards for work environment. Performing this project was necessary in order to make the system safer, reliable, predictable, and more beneficial to all users. Upon completion of data collection and analysis of the system, pictures were taken for visual aid, and improvement recommendations were developed. 3

Introduction Purpose The purpose of this project is to study the bus transportation service at the University of Houston which is also known as the Cougar Line. In this project the research team will be performing time and motion studies for all five bus routes from Monday thru Thursday at various times of the day in order to gather realistic data that represents the true population in this system. Such data will provide support for checking if the bus’ scheduled provided by the university transportation website is valid and matches with reality. This data also allows the team to analyze if the routes have been properly measured from stop to stop. Along with this, the team will be observing the bus drivers, and the number of people coming in and out of the bus at every stop. These factors are very important for measuring the traffic flow of people using the bus. Problem Although the cougar line has some sophisticated buses and a set schedule, there exists much room for improvement. The team has found a few problems with the bus system, and the most important being that buses are almost never on time. There are many factors which affect the timing of the bus, and in addition the bus drivers are constantly distracted by cell phones, a clock located above the driver’s head, and a time schedule sheet located at a window on the right side of the driver. 4
