RESEARCH PROCESS AND TERMINOLOGY 2 Abstract Understanding terminology is important in any field, but when you are doing research in criminal justice fields it is more important because the results of the research affect the outcome of a trial. This paper will explain the terminology used in the research process, how it is applied in the criminal justice field, and show how knowing the terminology can be an asset when evaluating and analyzing research studies in the criminal justice field.

RESEARCH PROCESS AND TERMINOLOGY 3 Research Process and Terminology To understand the research process thoroughly, it is important to be familiar with and understand the terminology and the general steps to research. The general steps for the research process are: 1. problem formation which is reviewing and selecting the area to be investigated, 2.research design which is the type of experimental or nonexperimental approach using studies of groups over a period of time and the use of control groups, 3. Data collection methods are methods such as observation, analysis of data, questionaires, and interviews, 4. Analysis and presentation of findings which summarizes and reports the findings, and 5. Conclusions and interpretations which explains what the researcher believes the study has to say. The knowledge that is gained when you fully understand the terminology can be an asset when you evaluate and analyze research data. Understanding the terminology allows an individual to appreciate the work put into research because they will understand the process and all the information that is gathered.
