An airplane has a total of 152 seats. The number of coach-class seats is 5 more than six times the number of first-class seats. How many of each type of seat are there on the plane? Let x = number of coach seats Let y = number of 1st class an airplane has a total of 152 seats x + y = 152 x = 5 + 6y x - 6y = 5 x + y = 152 x - 6y = 5 subtraction eliminates x: 0 + 7y = 174 y = 147/7 y = 21 each 1st class seats x+21=152 x=131 each coach seats
