He has reached a point in his life that he feels he is running out of time to “live” and he wants to give himself life fully before he passes. “His yearning for new and faraway places, his desire for freedom, relief, and oblivion was, as he admitted to himself, an urge to flee- an urge to get away from his work, from his everyday site of a cold, rigid, and passionate servitude” (p 291). 2.Given the many references to Ancient Greek myth and aesthetics, the Greek world was animportant concept of Aschenbach. Dionysus is the Greek god of passion and excess.
