Managing Diversity 15:44 Managing Diversity Dimensions of Diversity Personality   introverts and extroverts University   don’t want to recruit exclusively from one university Military Status   people with military experience have seen/done things like  anyone else Location in the USA   Different areas of the USA have separate cultures and  ways of life Protected-Group Concerns 1)Stereotyping   making judgments about a person based on some  demographic characteristics In organizations, need to judge based on the individual and not of their  demographic 2) Perceived hostile culture   when you don’t feel like you belong in a place  (you’re left out because you’re a woman and not a man) Laura worked for Southern Company and most people were from the South  and her boss was from Ohio and never felt part of the culture Continuum of Approaches for Managing Diversity Ignore, being dealing, build acceptance, solve issues/inclusive culture Continuum   is a range from very little of something to very much of something  and everything else falls in between The extreme end of this continuum is ignoring diversity and thinking it will solve  itself and at the other extreme end is a very inclusive culture where everyone is  involved Most company are in between the continuum Diversity Outcomes     Benefits Diverse thinking/problem solving

Employees who are “like” customers Customers look for companies that have lots of diversity Reduction in discrimination complaints/costs Also in legal challenges, lawsuits, and issues Recruiting/retention You’re better able to recruit from diverse populations if you’re organization has  diversity Must have top MGT Support/Accountability Monitoring system It is very tough to change anything and introduce anything without top  management support Need top management support for diversity training Accountability   Idea is that if you measure it people will pay attention to it In 1990 Coke faced a lawsuit from African Americans saying they’d be  discriminated against for pay and promotion Settled out of court for $192 million dollars and agreed to link the bonuses of  top management would be linked to the diversity of their groups Coke was saying that they were going to measure in their work group and  they would be rewarded for diversity in their work group Diversity Management Components     Diversity Training Has three components 1) legal awareness   all the material in chapter 4 Diversity training begins with orientation Disney is a best practice company with training
