2 ABSTRACT The goal of this lab was to explore the various mechanical properties of two polyester yarns. An Instron tester was used to test and compare the properties. A stress/strain diagram was constructed from the data collected by the Instron tester and used to calculate breaking stress, breaking elongation, work of rupture, and initial modulus. Analyzing the properties of both yarns showed that Yarn A had a greater tensile strength.

3 MATERIALS AND EQUIPEMENT Two 100% polyester samples of yarn were used in this experiment. The initial conditions for both yarns were as follows: Yarn A Yarn B Mass: 0.549 g 0.562g Length: 20.32 cm 20.32 cm Tex: 549g/1000m 561g/1000m A balance was used to obtain the mass of each yarn. An Instron tester, model 5567, was used to test the tensile strength on each of the yarn samples. Affixed to the Instron tester was a load cell with a 5000 N load capacity. One of the clamps was in tension while the other was in compression. A computer connected to the Instron tester was used to collect the data. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Yarn A and Yarn B were both cut to a gage length of 20.32 cm and weighed for testing. The Instron tester was preset with a traverse rate of 15 cm/min.
