3 The goal of this lab was to determine the bending rigidity of a polyester fabric using two different methods: a Cantilever Bending Test and a Pure Bending Test. The bending rigidity for the Cantilever Bending Test used both the area and mass of the sample and was found to be . 5418 g cm. The Pure Bending Test used the slope of the line from a plot of bending force versus radius of curvature to find the bending rigidity, equal to 0.5072 g cm. Comparing the mechanisms behind both tests, it was concluded that the Pure Bending Test was more accurate in determining the bending rigidity. MATERIALS AND EQUIPEMENT Four samples of 100% polyester fabric were used in the Cantilever Bending Test. A scale was used to measure the mass of all four samples. A Cantilever Bending Tester was used to determine the bending length of the fabric samples. For the Pure Bending Test, a 100% polyester sample was also used. The flexural rigidity for this sample was found using a Pure Bending Tester. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE For the Cantilever Bending Test, four samples of 100% polyester were cut into strips measuring 2.5 cm by 15 cm. The four samples were placed on a balance and the total mass was measured. One strip was then placed on the Cantilever Bending Tester. Once positioned, the tester was turned on, which initiated the tester to push the fabric over the edge of a stationary platform under its own weight.
