3 The goal of this lab was to identify two unknown fiber samples utilizing a burn test, a staining test, and a chemical solubility test. A white sample and a yellow sample were tested using each of the different methods. The burn test and staining test provided preliminary conclusions, whereas the solubility test confirmed the results. The yellow fiber was concluded to be cotton and the white fiber was concluded to be polyester. MATERIALS AND EQUIPEMENT Two unknown fiber samples, one yellow and one white, were the test samples for this experiment. A candle and match were used for the burning test. A staining solution and hot plate were used to stain the samples and then a multi-fiber fabric strip was used to compare to common polymers. Chemical solvents were then used to confirm the identity of the polymer. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In the burning test, a small tuft of the yellow fiber was held by tweezers and exposed to a burning flame. The tuft was then removed from the flame. It was noted whether or not the fiber
