2 ABSTRACT Dynamic thermal analysis (DMA) is a thermal analysis technique used to determine the dynamic mechanical properties of polymers. Results of a DMA give information on the relationship between dynamic properties, structural parameters, and external variables. In this lab, a sample of polystyrene film was used. The modulus for DMA was calculated from the material’s response to a sine wave, an oscillating force. The three modules, storage modulus, loss modulus, and the damping coefficient, were then determined.

3 MATERIALS AND EQUIPEMENT TA DMA Q800 V7.5 Build 127 Sample of polystyrene (PS) Computer EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE To begin the experiment, the polystyrene sample was mounted between two sets of clamps on the DMA machine. The test parameters were then entered into the computer. The oscillation was set to a frequency of 10 cycles per minute. The heating rate was set to 3°C, starting at 30°C and ending at 120°C.
