MSE 2020 2/17/2011 Page 1 of 2 X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Photoelectric effect frees electrons Sample is put into vacuum X-rays cause sample to emit photoelectrons These generated photoelectrons can only escape if they are close to the surface o Very surface sensitive technique = + hν Binding Energy Kinetic Energy Can sort the electrons by kinetic energy, then calculate the binding energy to compare The peaks shift with different elements/molecules Gives info about the elements present and the valency of the electrons (e.g. oxidation) All data is shifted by the work function (energy necessary to escape the solid) Constant energy of x-rays (monochromatic beam) Broad range of kinetic energies of electrons Sorting gives a spectrum of binding energies Curved electric field for electrons to travel through o Different bending depending on kinetic energy (binding energy) o Spatial detector used o X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy
