1 Eng 411 Motai Writing Assignment #1 (Short Paper): “D.P.,” by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Every story has a theme and message. It is rare, however, that an author will directly state this theme and message: It must be inferred and interpreted by the reader, and in an essay, validated by providing evidence in the form references to the text (words) of the story. References can include the characters’ background, the author’s description of the characters, the dialogue (spoken words) in the story, the story’s setting, language elements such as metaphor and symbols, and any other aspects of the story that can illustrate the theme and message proposed by the essay-writer in the thesis statement of the essay. _____________________________________________________________________________ _ Writing Assignment: Write a well-organized essay in which you present an important theme of the story “D.P.”
