Eng 209 Motai CITING SOURCES and HOW and WHEN TO USE QUOTATIONS AND PARAPHRASES IN YOUR ESSAYS CITING SOURCES (The examples below come from “Media Violence Promotes Healthy Behavior,” by Gerard Jones) In English 209, a formal citation format such as APA is not used because, rather than doing your own research, you are using a limited group of articles from our Course Reader. It is still necessary, however, to let the reader know the name of the author you are quoting or paraphrasing, and where ( which paragraph ) the material you are using can be found in the article. Summaries of the articles: Summaries of the articles you are using (in the introductory paragraph of the essay) will include the title of the article, the author’s first and last name the author’s main idea/s. When you use a quotation or a paraphrase in your essay, you can cite in 2 ways: (1) State the author’s LAST name in your sentence and put the paragraph # in parenthesis, following the quotation you use. Example: Violent media can have beneficial effects on a wide range of people. As Jones notes, “Across generations, genders, and ethnicities I kept seeing the same story…People pulling themselves out of emotional traps by immersing
