I chose an article in one of the pig magazines that was entitled “Animal Welfare. However, it had very little to do with animal welfare and more to do with ways to improve swine practices in certain areas. The article covered management affects on group sow housing, curing water wastage in post weaning pigs, pig friendly loading chute minimizes loading stressors, and electric prod use can be costly. All of which can have a substantial impact on the agricultural industry and the economy. The section over management affects on group sow housing probably has the most affect on the agricultural industry for swine. They made an experiment to see whether an ESF system for feeding multiple sows in a static or dynamic group versus a sow held in a typical stall. The results were that sows fed of the ESF system in a dynamic group typically did better than those in a static group, and they even did better when put up against the stalls provided they were done in a post-implant versus a pre-implant.
