HDFS 2113 March 30 th , 2009 Journal #2 I believe the three most important contributors to identity development are parents, the functions of friendships, and the deficits vs. assets dispute. First, we have the influence of parents on the identity development. I think everyone would agree that sometimes, the parents have such massive influence on us we do not even realize it. We only recognize it once we reach a certain age of maturity. The parents’ support and control on a child can eventually shape the child’s identity. There are many role conflicts when it comes to influencing a child. The parents may not want to let go or let go too much. Or, rather let the mother have more control over the father and vice versa. Second, we have the functions of friendships. The functions consist of companionship, stimulation, physical support, ego support, social comparison, and intimacy/affection. I think the level of influence of friends depends on the type of personality someone has. For some people, the level is so high they start imitating their friends. And by imitating their friends, it influences
