Chelsea Martin Paying for Health Care New Visions- Economics June 2008 These days, the cost of health insurance is out of this world. Every year prices increase dramatically. Right now, our country spends $2 trillion on health care each year. That is about 16% of our entire United States economy. Despite the amount of money we spend on health care we are still in 29 th place in the world in terms of life expectancy, behind almost all of Europe. Something must be done about the rising health care costs! The first solution we have is to place more responsibility in the hands of the individual when it comes to buying health care. Employers are becoming the main providers of health care in the country, causing individuals not to realize how expensive it really is. When we require individuals to obtain their own insurance they can buy the policies that make sense for their situation. With this plan people could also have tax-free health saving accounts that would be used directly for medical bills. Also if we make people get their own insurance it would give the health industry incentive to keep health care costs down and it would give the individual incentive to maintain a health life style. With this solution we could “curtail and cap runaway” malpractice litigations (which are
