Chelsea K. Martin Tuesdays with Morrie New Visions March 18, 2008 Some people spend their whole lives searching for the meaning of life yet they never seem to discover what it is. There are a few lucky individuals though who look at life in a different way and they have the ability to see just what being here on this planet is all about. They realize how precious time is and they really know how to make the best of any situation. Morrie Schwartz was one of these people. Morrie’s biggest metaphor for life comes from an Indian philosophy about the “tension of opposites”. He described this by using a rubber band. "Life is a series of pulls back and forth. You want to do one thing, but you are bound to do something else." "A tension of opposites, like a pull on a rubber band. And most of us live somewhere in the middle." Everyday this tension takes place. We have to deal with life’s positive aspects and negativity at every moment during the day and sometimes we just get stuck somewhere in between. It is like deciding whether or not to eat a bowl of ice cream or it is like talking to the one person you hate when the resolution of a problem depends on him. Or for example, in Match Album’s case it is like helping someone who has wronged you because he is your brother. A lot of times people don’t know what to do in situations like these just because there are so many points in the decision and they can not force themselves to take sides. People learn to compromise and that is how they end up in the middle. Being in the middle of the rubber band is not a bad thing, as Morrie would say, if you don’t know how to compromise in marriage, you’re in trouble.
