ME 481 Mechanical Engineering Design Project Fall 2011 Project List Updated September 9th TITLE: Large Diameter Sanitary Trunk Sewer Robotic Crawler DESCRIPTION: Industry sponsored project with Andrews Infrastructure, Ottawa, Ontario Heavy duty robotic crawlers are used to transport CCTV equipment through sewers in order to carry out internal inspections. The crawlers currently available in the marketplace are typically not very reliable for use in very large diameter sewers. The problem that arises is that as the crawler travels down the sewer; a large amount of drag occurs on the umbilical cable (power and data transfer). As well, due to the nature of large diameter trunk sewers there is a large propensity for the crawler to get knocked over and become unbalanced (there is normally a camera mounted high above the moving lower body such that the center of gravity is shifted from the center base). Students who part-take in this project will be given the opportunity to make a site visit to gain an overall understanding of the purpose of the project as well as the conditions that the tractor undergoes such that it can be designed in the appropriate manner. The end goal of this project to achieve a functional prototype, as such an 8 month commitment is ideal. Presentations will be reviewed by Andrews Infrastructure prior to presentation in order to ensure no proprietary information in said presentation. There are 5 potential topics that may be addressed: Front and Rear Chassis/Drive Train Body/Frame Motor Electrical Connections (umbilical power cable/sonar/laser/CCTV camera) Control/Variable Power and Torque SUPERVISOR: Industry supervisors John David Chibuk [email protected] Mark E. Andrews Faculty co-supervisor also required (TBD by students) NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 5 PROJECT LISTED: August 31, 2011 TITLE: UW Clean Snowmobile Team DESCRIPTION: The SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge is an annual engineering design competition for college and university students to modify a stock snowmobile and develop technical innovations in engine design, emission control and noise suppression techniques. The UW team participated in the competition in 2009 - 2011, and the team plans to participate in the 2012 competition in Houghton, Michigan in March. The team will be taking their 2009 Ski-doo Renegade Rev XP chassis powered by a turbocharged 660cc, 3-cylinder, 4-stroke engine from a 2006 Arctic Cat snowmobile with custom turbocharger, intercooler, and fuel injection systems to the 2012 competition. For the 2013 competition the team will be designing a building a new concept based on a 2010 or 2011 Ski- doo Rev XP chassis and the design project topics for the F11 term are focused on this project. The new design will modify the 600cc, 2-cylinder, 4-stroke ACE engine from the Ski-doo
