4.01 Manifest Destiny Chloe Savage a.Nevins speaks about the conflicts between the North and the South, pro-slavery and anti-slavery beliefs, and extreme versus moderate ideals. The Wilmot Proviso outlawed slavery in the new territory gained from Mexico, but this was sure to start a fight. Since the new territories were so close to the southern states, they were clearly easily influenced into pro-slavery beliefs, which created conflict with the newly created Wilmot Proviso, ending eventually in war and hatred between all parties. b.The long Civil War between the South and North over slavery rights proves Nevins’ argument, as he says that conflicts always strengthen as the medians become more and more extreme. As the war went on, the ideas became more and more radical, since at the start the majority of the people in the North believed in freedom for slaves, but certainly not
