anti-slavery beliefs, and extreme versus moderate ideals. The Wilmot Proviso outlawed
slavery in the new territory gained from Mexico, but this was sure to start a fight. Since the
new territories were so close to the southern states, they were clearly easily influenced into
pro-slavery beliefs, which created conflict with the newly created Wilmot Proviso, ending
eventually in war and hatred between all parties.

The long Civil War between the South and North over slavery rights proves Nevins’
argument, as he says that conflicts always strengthen as the medians become more and
