Lab Experiment #7 Intermolecular Forces and the Evaporation of Liquids Ryan Henry Section 523 Lab Partner: Make-Up Lab Summary : This lab showed how the strength of the intermolecular forces varies with molecular size and structure. The existence of solids and liquids provides us with direct evidence of the importance of intermolecular forces. In this experiment I performed two different measurements that will help me establish the relative strength of intermolecular forces in some organic liquids. By relating the observations to the molecular formulas and structures of the different liquids, I should be able to make some conclusions about the role of molecular size and structure in determining intermolecular forces. In the first part of the experiment I measured the temperature changes as liquids evaporate. Since the process is endothermic, the evaporation will cause a temperature decrease. In the second part of the experiment I measured the vapor pressure of two liquids as a function of temperature. When a liquid and its vapor exist in the same container, a dynamic equilibrium is established in which molecules can move back and forth between the gas phase and the liquid phase. The strength of the intermolecular forces governs the rate at which molecules leave the liquid, and therefore the vapor pressure is a direct indicator of the strength of
