Lab Experiment #9 Chemical Kinetics: Experimental Determination of Rate Law Ryan Henry Section 523 Lab Partner: Charlotte McCoy Summary : The purpose of this experiment is to determine the rate law for a chemical reaction using a series of measurements. In the reaction used, a dye molecule known as crystal violet reacts with hydroxide ions to form a colorless solution. The progress of this reaction can be determined by monitoring the color of the solution as a function of time after the reactants are mixed. First, I had to calibrate the calorimeter. I had the newer calorimeter so I inserted a cuvette ¾ full of water into the calorimeter, made sure the settings were 565 nm for this experiment, and pressed the CAL button to calibrate the calorimeter. To initiate the chemical reaction, simultaneously pour the 10-mL portions of crystal violet and sodium hydroxide into a small beaker and mix by stirring with a stirring rod or by swirling the beaker carefully.
