2 Cosmetic surgery is growing more popular but is it worth the risk? Cosmetic surgery is growing popular as more people are turning to surgery to improve their body images. If, there is something about ourselves we do not like why not change it? Looks are important to self- esteem and a person’s confidence. So changing something we do not like about ourselves can improve our self confidence and self- esteem. We’ve all heard that true beauty comes from within, but as a society we want it to show on the outside as well. [Cosmetic surgery has grown more popular through the media with shows like Nip/Tuck, and the Swan. There are an increasing number of article magazines that tell us about the newest breakthroughs in cosmetic surgery.] (Williamson, 2004) With the media showing so much on cosmetic surgery, more people are considering having a procedure done. Cosmetic surgery used to be for the rich and famous or a last resort. Times have changed and it seems to be the first alternative people turn to. Influences from movie stars and musicians have us striving to achieve the perfect body image. We hear every day that an actress or musicians has had cosmetic surgery to improve their looks. People look up to entertainers as role models for what we should look like. I think this increases the popularity of cosmetic surgery. [Madonna, Heather Locklear, Cher, and Pamela Anderson are some examples of actresses and musicians that have had cosmetic surgery done. Younger musicians and actresses are also having cosmetic surgery done. Lindsey Lohan, Brittney Spears, and Ashley Simpson have had cosmetic surgery done.] (Plastic, 2008). The cost of plastic surgery can be high. The cost of the procedure can depend on where we live and what procedure we want done. For example, cosmetic surgery is more expensive in New England than it is in the western area of the United States. A face lift can cost $6,298, and a nose job can cost $4,188 according to a 2005 study. This includes: lab fees, hospital room fees and anesthesia fees. There are a few different procedures in cosmetic surgery that seem to be more popular. This includes: breast augmentation, abdominoplasty (also known as a tummy tuck), rhinoplasty (nose job), and rhytidectomy (face lift) Many risks are involved with cosmetic surgery. Procedures don’t always go as planned.
