ADJ 235 - Week 7 - DQ #1 What are the goals of punishment and corrections? Explain the rationale behind those goals. How does the concept of community corrections relate to these goals and rationale? The goals of corrections and punishment are 1. Retribution (which means a person gets their “Just Deserts" and deserve to be punished) 2. Deterrence (offenders may be deterred from committing criminal acts, because they may rationalize that the legal consequences are too great) 3. Incapacitation( this is when the criminal is no longer in a position to commit criminal acts because he/she is physically detained) 4. Rehabilitation (the goal of rehabilitation is to treat the underlying issue that is the factor in why the criminal committed his/her criminal offenses, an example factor would be a drug problem) These are the four goals of the criminal justice system corrections and punishment, also community corrections is a form of punishment, the criminal may be placed on house arrest, probation and parole.
