Piper Gunderson Decomposition of Cupric Oxide- Lab 6 Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to decompose cupric oxide through a decomposition reaction of the metaliic oxide, cupric oxide. 2CaO + C 2Cu + CO 2 Materials: balance previously produced cupric oxide Chemical factory produced Cu 2 ring stand hardware 2 crucible with holder tongs 2 Bunsen Burners Activated charcoal (source of carbon) Procedure: 1. Save the Cupric oxide produced and place in a pre-weighed crucible 2. Take .3g of the Cu from a chemical factory and place into a pre-weighed crucible in order to make 2CuO. 3. Take .3g chemical factory 2CuO and add .0225g of charcoal (amount derived from the equation) 4. Take the previously prepared 2CuO and add .0225g of charcoal (amount derived from equation) 5. Stir both the mixtures together lightly 6. Heat the Crucibles for one minute and observe the reactions. 7. Continue heating both the crucibles for 10 minutes and allow cooling 8. Weigh both crucibles. Results:
